This unique and original botanical cyanotype was handmade on a 100 percent cotton scarf with ferns foraged from the forest where I dwell in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
The plants were arranged on the fabric, which was treated with photosensitive iron salts, and exposed to sunlight under glass. Afterward the scarf was washed in a spring water bath to remove the iron salt residue. The reveal began here as the blue green colours came through when dried; a truly magical process from start to finish with surprising results imparted by spices, soap, and vinegar that I added resulting in unique pastel to light shades.
This creative process combines my love of plants and place and involves the use of elements, making the creation of a wearable work of art a wondrous gift of joy to me, which is my pleasure to share with you!
The scarf is 14 inches x 72 inches and has fringed ends; it has been washed, dried, and ironed. It was photographed in outdoor and indoor lighting.
Hand wash with cold water using a small amount of soap free of bleach, phosphates, soda, or borax. Hang dry. The scarf can be ironed. Do not dry clean.
note: this scarf has an imperceptible flaw on an edge.
